Angelina Jolie reflects on mom’s cancer death at TIFF

A tearful Angelina Jolie reflected on her mom Marcheline Bertrand’s 2007 cancer death during an emotional Toronto International Film Festival appearance.

During a Q&A for the actress’s latest film, “Couture,” on Sunday, a fan who had recently lost a friend to cancer asked the cast what their message of “hope” was for those who are still grieving.

“I’m very sorry for your loss,” Jolie said as she began to get choked up.

“I think I will say that one thing I remember my mother saying when she had cancer, she said to me once, we had had a dinner and people were asking her how she was feeling and she said, ‘All anybody ever asks me about is cancer,’” she added.

The “Maleficent” star, 50, continued: “So I would say, if you know someone who is going through something, ask them about everything else in their life as well, you know? They’re a whole person and they’re still living.”

In 1999, Bertrand was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. The “Lookin’ to Get Out” actress was later diagnosed with breast cancer.

Bertrand passed away in January 2007 at the age of 56.

Six years after her death, Jolie underwent a double mastectomy because she had a high risk of developing breast cancer.

In 2020, the mom of six wrote about her mother’s life and death in a second essay for the New York Times.

Jolie compared losing her mother to someone “rip[ping] away a protective blanket.”

“When I look back to that time, I can see how much her death changed me,” she wrote at the time. “It was not sudden, but so much shifted inside. Losing a mother’s love and warm, soft embrace is like having someone rip away a protective blanket.”

Bertrand shared Jolie and son James Haven, 52, with famed actor Jon Voight.

The late actress and the “Anaconda” actor, 86, divorced shortly after the “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” star’s birth due to Voight’s infidelity.
