Airport Worker Dies After Being Struck by Vehicle in ‘Fatal Incident’

A man has died after being struck by a vehicle at an airport in Sydney, Australia.
On Sunday, Sept. 7, the New South Wales Police Force confirmed in a press release that a freight handler, died at Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport, commonly referred to as Sydney Airport, earlier in the day.
They reported that the incident occurred around 10:30 a.m., writing, “emergency services responded to reports that a freight handler at Sydney Airport had been struck by a vehicle at the freight handling terminal.”
They added, “NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the man — believed to be aged in his 40’s — but he died at the scene.”

A crime scene was established, but authorities noted that the death was “not being treated as suspicious.”
“Worksafe NSW have been notified,” the release continued. “A report will be prepared for the information of the coroner.”
The man’s identity has not yet been confirmed.
Sydney Airport expressed condolences in a statement to PEOPLE.

“Everyone at Sydney Airport is deeply saddened by the fatal incident involving an airfreight worker yesterday,” a spokesperson from the airport said.
“Our thoughts are with the worker’s family, friends and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time,” they added. “Sydney Airport has made its support services available to all staff across the airport precinct.”

The spokesperson went on to say that they were “working to support the airline and relevant authorities as they investigate the incident.”
Australia’s flagship carrier Qantas confirmed to news.com.au that the incident occurred at their international freight terminal, adding that they were “working closely with the relevant authorities”.
“Our thoughts are with the worker’s family, friends and colleagues at this difficult time,” the statement concluded.
Passenger operations were not affected, per the outlet.
SafeWork NSW also confirmed to the outlet that they had been notified, stating, “SafeWork inspectors are responding and making inquiries.”
