  • Since its debut in 2003, the flagship NCIS series has spawned six spinoffs
  • NCIS: LA was the first to be canceled, while NCIS: Sydney was green lit for a third season
  • NCIS: Tony & Ziva is the latest addition to the franchise, which premiered on Sept. 4

Nearly a quarter of a century since it premiered, NCIS — a.k.a. the Naval Criminal Investigative Service — has spawned a television franchise filled with action and memorable characters.

The flagship series premiered on CBS in September 2003, and over the years, six spinoffs have followed, with the latest, NCIS: Tony & Ziva premiering Sept. 4 on Paramount+.

In the decades since its debut, the NCIS franchise has aired over a thousand episodes, with more on the way as NCIS, NCIS: Sydney and NCIS: Origins returning for more seasons.

NCIS co-showrunner Steven D. Binder thinks one reason the shows have remained popular is that it “is appealing to a wide range of people,” as he told TheWrap in April 2024. “Being a show that men can watch and women can watch, and that kids can watch with their parents.”

“It also helps that we’re not a serialized show. You can tune in and tune out, although there doesn’t seem to be a lot of tuning out,” Binder added.

With several shows and numerous episodes, where can fans catch up on the long-running action series? Here’s how to watch NCIS and its spinoffs, including NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS: New Orleans, NCIS: Hawai’i, NCIS: Sydney, NCIS: Origins and NCIS: Tony & Ziva.

The original flagship series premiered in September 2003, and it’s about to return for season 23 on Oct. 14, making NCIS the third-longest-running primetime drama in television history, per The Hollywood Reporter.

The CBS action drama originally starred Mark Harmon, Michael Weatherly, Pauley Perrette, David McCallum, Sean Murray, Cote de Pablo, Rocky Carroll and Brian Dietzen.

Over its many seasons, a newer class of special agents has continued the adventures of the NCIS team. In recent years, the cast has included Emily Wickersham, Wilmer Valderrama, Diona Reasonover, Katrina Law and Gary Cole.

Notably, Harmon, who played lead Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibb, left the series in 2021, during season 19.

The first NCIS spinoff, NCIS: Los Angeles, followed the adventures of the Office of Special Projects, a branch of NCIS.

NCIS: LA starred Chris O’Donnell, Peter Cambor, Daniela Ruah, Linda Hunt, LL Cool J and Eric Christian Olsen, among others. It ran for 14 seasons, airing from September 2009 to May 2023.

At the show’s wrap party in March 2023, LL Cool J told PEOPLE that the last day of filming felt monumental after 14 years.

“Normally they’ll be like, ‘All right, that’s an episode wrap,’ but this was an episode wrap, a show wrap and a series wrap,” recalled the actor and rapper, who played Senior Special Agent Sam Hanna. “It was big and felt big, but it felt like we accomplished something.”

NCIS: New Orleans was more murder than Mardi Gras when the franchise went down to the Big Easy.

The second spinoff premiered in September 2014 and was on the air for seven seasons. NCIS: New Orleans starred Scott Bakula, Lucas Black, Zoe McLellan, Rob Kerkovich, CCH Pounder, Daryl Mitchell, Vanessa Ferlito, Charles Michael Davis and Chelsea Field.

The show was eventually canceled in May 2021 with a total of 155 episodes. It was the first NCIS show to end.

“Sad to end our love affair with this phenomenal city but so grateful for all the friends we made along the way,” Bakula said in a statement at the time. “I will miss the music. Big thank you to CBS for seven years.”

NCIS caught a wave to the Aloha State with NCIS: Hawai’i, which debuted in September 2021. It aired for three seasons before it ended in May 2024 after 54 episodes.

The spinoff made NCIS history when it featured the franchise’s first female lead, Jane Tennant (Vanessa Lachey), who was in charge of the Naval Criminal Investigation Service at the Pearl Harbor Field Office.

It’s an honor to be able to add to this incredible franchise and to do it as the first female lead has meant more to me than I can ever express,” Lachey told PEOPLE about being part of the NCIS family. “It shows the incredible evolution and longevity that NCIS continues to give its fans.”

In addition to Lachey, the rest of the NCIS: Hawai’i cast included Alex Tarrant, Yasmine Al-Bustami, Tori Anderson, Noah Mills, Jason Antoon and Kian Talan.

In the show’s third and final season, LL Cool J came over from NCIS: Los Angeles, reprising his role of Sam Hanna.

For its first international edition, NCIS traveled Down Under for NCIS: Sydney.

The series, which debuted in November 2023, follows a group of United States NCIS working alongside the Australian Federal Police (AFP) to form a “multinational task force to keep naval crimes in check in the most contested patch of ocean on the planet,” per CBS.

NCIS: Sydney stars Olivia Swann, Todd Lasance, Sean Sagar, Tuuli Narkle, Mavournee Hazel and William McInnes.

In February 2025, CBS confirmed NCIS: Sydney will return for a season 3, which is premiering on Oct. 14.

“With two seasons under our belt, we are looking forward to upping the ante and bringing even more fun-filled, high-octane action from our incredible NCIS: Sydney team,” executive producer and showrunner Morgan O’Neill said in a press release when the renewal was announced.

NCIS: Origins depicts the early days of Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs, in the prequel to the NCIS flagship series.

The series is set in 1991, and follows Gibbs (Austin Stowell) as he starts his career with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. Harmon, who played Gibbs on NCIS, reprised his role, narrating the show as the older version of the character.

NCIS: Origins premiered in October 2024, and CBS announced the crime procedural prequel had been renewed for a second season in February 2025, set to debut on Oct. 14.

Stowell stars as Gibbs, while Kyle Schmid plays a younger version of Special Agent Mike Franks. Mariel Molino costars as Special Agent Cecilia “Lala” Dominguez.

Actors Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo are back as their beloved NCIS characters, Anthony “Tony” DiNozzo and Ziva David, respectively, or “Tiva” as fans affectionately call them.

It’s been years since Tony and Ziva left NCIS, but they find themselves in the middle of an international spy mission, while running across Europe to protect themselves and their daughter, Tali (Isla Gie).

According to the official plot description, the on-again, off-again couple must “try to figure out who is after them and maybe even learn to trust each other again so that they can finally have their unconventional happily ever after.”
