Hold onto your treasure maps, because there’s a new Lara Croft in town.

Sophie Turner is set to headline Prime Video’s upcoming Tomb Raider series, stepping into the role of the iconic globe-trotting archaeologist. The character began as a beloved video game heroine before Angelina Jolie took her to the big screen in 2001 and Alicia Vikander reimagined her in 2018.

“I’m so excited to announce the formidable Sophie Turner as our Lara,” creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge said in a statement, per Variety. “It’s not very often you get to make a show of this scale with a character you grew up loving. Get your artifacts out … Croft is coming …”

The live-action series has been years in the making. Word first emerged that Waller-Bridge had been tapped to write a Tomb Raider TV show in January 2023, per Deadline. The series was officially greenlit in May 2024, according to Variety.

What is the Tomb Raider series about?

As of now, there is no official synopsis for the upcoming Tomb Raider series, but Amazon MGM Studios head Jennifer Salke promises that the show will feature “exhilarating adventures that honor the legacy of [Lara Croft],” per Entertainment Weekly.

Waller-Bridge echoed a similar sentiment in her statement, saying, “Everyone on board is wildly passionate about Lara and are all as outrageous, brave and hilarious as she is.”

Turner will play Lara Croft, the fearless British archaeologist who’s always ready to swing into action with her iconic braid flying and dual pistols blazing.

“I am thrilled beyond measure to be playing Lara Croft,” the Game of Thrones alum said in a statement. “She’s such an iconic character, who means so much to so many — and I am giving everything I’ve got.”

Turner continued, “They’re massive shoes to fill, following in the steps of Angelina and Alicia with their powerhouse performances, but with Phoebe at the helm, we (and Lara) are all in very safe hands. I can’t wait for you all to see what we have cooking.”

At this time, no other cast members have been announced.

Who is directing the Tomb Raider series?

Jonathan van Tulleken will serve as director and executive producer of the Tomb Raider series. He is best known for directing episodes of Shōgun, Dope Thief and Top Boy.

He will work alongside creator and writer Waller-Bridge, whom most fans know as the Emmy-winning star of Prime Video’s Fleabag.

“If I could tell my teenage self this was happening, I think she’d explode,” Waller-Bridge said in a May 2024 statement. “Tomb Raider has been a huge part of my life, and I feel incredibly privileged to be bringing it to television with such passionate collaborators.”

She continued, “Lara Croft means a lot to me, as she does to many, and I can’t wait to go on this adventure. Bats ‘n all.”
