All About Andy Roddick and Brooklyn Decker’s Relationship
Andy Roddick and Brooklyn Decker had a whirlwind romance.
The former tennis star first reached out to the actress after seeing her host a Sports Illustrated football show. They dated for less than a year before getting engaged in March 2008, and tied the knot in 2009 in an intimate Texas ceremony.
Speaking with GQ in August 2023, Roddick shared that he didn’t anticipate getting married before meeting Decker.
“I went from, ‘I don’t think I’m gonna get in a serious relationship forever,’ and then we were engaged in, like, six months,” he said. “And then we really got to know each other.”
The couple now share two children together: son Hank and daughter Stevie. During an interview with Tennis Channel in July 2017, Decker said that Roddick’s retirement from tennis allowed him to be more present with their family.
“He’s an unbelievable dad, incredibly hands-on,” she said. “I feel so thankful that it happened after he retired, because he’s here every day with them and, for me, that’s what I’m most proud of.”
From how they met to welcoming two children together, here’s everything to know about Andy Roddick and Brooklyn Decker’s relationship.

Roddick and Decker had a rocky start to their relationship. The actress told the Tennis Channel that the former tennis player reached out to her, but she didn’t respond for several months.
“I was hosting a show about football for Sports Illustrated on si.com, and he watched it every week,” she said. “He got his attorney to call my agent at the time, and I thought it was very shady, as one would, and I didn’t call him back for five months.”
Decker shared that it was her now-manager who encouraged her to call Roddick back since she had recently moved to New York City from North Carolina and had yet to make friends.
“I googled him and watched his press conference from the ’07 Aussie Open, where he was just super dry and sarcastic, and I thought, well, that’s pretty funny, looks like a charmer, and so I called him back, and then we were together ever since,” she said.

After nearly a year of dating, Decker and Roddick got engaged in March 2008. During an April 2020 appearance on Shawn Johnson and Andrew East’s podcast, Couple Things, the pair opened up about their “bizarre” engagement story.
“Andy was playing in Indian Wells in Palm Springs, and so he’s the worst at surprises … He was like, ‘Hey, so I have the engagement ring with me, do you want to see it?’ I’m like, ‘No! I don’t want to see it,’ ” Decker said. “So, of course, he brings out the ring and like flashes it. So, I’ve seen the ring, I know it’s there, but I think the proposal is coming a few months later.”
The actress explained that days later, Roddick went for a walk around the hotel before appearing at the door of their balcony.
“I open the door, and Andy is on his knee, and he has broken a branch off of a bush, it was like a holly bush,” she said. The holly branch turned out to have ants on it, so Roddick tossed it aside before launching into a “very sweet” proposal.

Roddick and Decker tied the knot on April 17, 2009, in an intimate ceremony in Austin, Texas.
In a blog post, the former tennis star shared details about the wedding, which was attended by fellow players Steffi Graf and Andre Agassi.
“It was great to have so many of our family and friends make the trip and share the occasion with us,” he wrote. “We had to set up a tent ’cause the weather was not agreeing with us, but it ended up working out, so all good.”
Elton John performed at their reception, which was “very surreal” for Roddick. “It was beyond awesome of him to make time for us and needless to say it was beyond amazing,” he added.

Roddick and Decker are parents to two children. They welcomed son Hank in September 2015 and daughter Stevie in November 2017.
Speaking with PEOPLE in July 2018, Decker opened up about becoming a mom of two.
“It’s utterly exhausting. But wonderful. It’s so much fun, and every cliché is true. Every cliché in the book that they say,” she said. “It’s the most beautiful thing in the world. It’s the most exhausting thing in the world. It’s the most fulfilling thing in the world. All of that is true. It’s wonderful.”
The actress also shared that she and Roddick won’t push their children to take on tennis or modeling and acting as a profession.
“Hopefully he’s, like, a doctor,” she joked. “Hopefully he has some career stability, unlike his father and me. No, I think both of us, all we want for our children is to have a stable job and income.”

Though Roddick retired from tennis in 2012, the pair were often apart during the early years of their marriage. Roddick told GQ that being married pushed them to work out any issues.
“If we hadn’t actually made that commitment, I don’t know that we get through that,” he said.
Decker echoed the same sentiment to the outlet. “With our relationship, I think that ego and insecurity about failing—and failing publicly—was very much a motivation to put our heads together and figure this out,” she said.
The actress also told GQ that she became frustrated with Roddick’s personality change toward the end of his tennis career.
“He was not as happy playing,” she said. “He became significantly less patient with his injuries. He was irritable. And I naively thought, ‘I married this man and now he’s changing. What’s going on here?’ ”
Decker added, “And when he retired, it was like a light switched on in him. And he became the person who I knew and fell in love with. And after some time I realized, ‘Oh, this is a man who was suffering and really grappling with the end of his career. And the end of that identity.’ ”
They’re supportive of each other

During an interview with Scary Mommy in December 2020, Decker shared how supportive she and Roddick are of each other, both in their careers and as parents.
“He supports everything,” she said. “I’ve changed my career a million times. I’ve done a million different things. I don’t know if it’s just being indecisive or not knowing what I want. And he says, ‘Great, we’ll figure it out. Awesome.’ ”
Decker added, “We’re blindly supportive of each other. And we shift. I promise it’s not this easy, but I do feel like we’re really good about stepping in when someone’s just exhausted and worn out and it’s time to tap out. We have figured out how to do that.”
The Grace and Frankie actress also explained that while the pair are often “not aligned on a lot of things in life,” they are “aligned on our level of discipline with the kids.”
Roddick and Decker keep a low profile

Roddick and Decker rarely make public appearances together. However, they did attend the 2023 Met Gala and were seen at Wimbledon in July 2025.
Speaking with Scary Mommy in December 2020, Decker shared why she chooses to mostly keep her family life off social media.
“I have friends who have huge profiles who show their children because if they don’t, they’ll be hounded by paparazzi — they’ll have no privacy,” she said. “But for us, that’s not a problem we have. So we want to let them choose. What is out on the internet is our digital footprint and it’ll be our background check in the future.”
