UFC match on White House lawn penciled in for June with weigh-ins on Lincoln Memorial steps: report
WASHINGTON — President Trump’s plan for an Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) match on the White House grounds is progressing — with a tentative timeframe in June and discussions of fighter weigh-ins on the Lincoln Memorial steps, according to a new report.
Trump announced this July that “we’re going to have a UFC fight — think of this — on the grounds of the White House” — and UFC CEO Dana White publicly confirmed plans to hold the event on the South Lawn despite the fact that it would result in more limited access by spectators.
White reconfirmed the plans last week after a meeting with Trump administration officials in Washington.
“It’s going to be awesome. The White House fight is on,” he beamed. “I will have more details on that in the next couple weeks. But we got it done today.”
The fight’s tentative timing was first reported Friday by the Wall Street Journal, which also reported the potential weigh-in venue.
A White House spokesman did not reply to The Post’s request for confirmation.
The event ostensibly will be in honor of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
Trump outlined a grandiose vision for the fight — after attending matches in New Jersey and Florida with Elon Musk and other high-profile advisers.
“We have a lot of land there, we’re going to build a little — we’re not, Dana is going to do it. Dana is great, one of a kind — going to be UFC fight, championship fight, full fight, like 20,000 to 25,000 people, and we’re going to do that as part of ‘250,’” Trump said during a speech in Iowa.
White later said that a larger venue than the White House lawn was offered to him to accommodate a larger crowd, but that he signaled his preference to be as close to the executive mansion as possible.
