Stream It Or Skip It?

In each episode of Dish It Out, Tilly Ramsay shows how to make three different recipes; the first recipe is one that’s near and dear to a celebrity guest, and she helps that celebrity make it. The second recipe is a quick one that’s based on trending videos shown on TikTok and other social media. The third recipe is made by Ramsay, who is about to enter culinary school, with the help of a video made for her by one of the social media cooks who came up with that recipe.

DISH IT OUT: STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

Opening Shot: “Hey, y’all!” Tilly Ramsay says in a pretend drawl, then says, “I’m kidding. I can’t do an American accent. And that was terrible!”

The Gist: Tilly gets her celebrity and culinary connections out of the way in the first episode — which has the theme of “comfort foods” — by having her father Gordon Ramsay join her on her kitchen set to make his version of Croque Monsieur/ Croque Madame. He made this dish all the time when he was around Tilly’s age and training in a high-end restaurant in Paris. He puts his own spin on making a bechamel sauce for the sandwich and even puts chili flakes on the egg that makes the Monsieur into a Madame.

Other guest stars in the 32-episode first season include her mother, Tana Ramsay, Daphne Oz, Frankie Grande, Clinton Kelly, Ellie Taylor, Gillian Jacobs, Sistine Stallone and Richard Blais.

Tilly then makes a “Mason Jar Soup” that she sees all over TikTok. In the last segment, she makes Beet Dough Vareniki, a pierogi-like dumpling whose dough is made with beets and kefir, a recipe submitted by Emily Fedner of Food Lover’s Diary.

What Shows Will It Remind You Of? Dish It Out is a pretty standard “dump and stir” cooking show in the vein of Rachael Ray’s 30 Minute Meals or (gulp) With Love, Meghan.

Our Take: With cooking shows like Dish It Out, you want two to see two things: A personable host and recipes that look great on TV and are achievable by the home viewer. The series meets all of that criteria, but the biggest reason to watch is the sunny presence of Tilly Ramsay.

Ramsay is actually a veteran presenter, having hosted a kids’ series featuring her family a decade ago, as well as joining her father on his various competition series. So she is absolutely comfortable in front of the camera, and it shows in how easygoing she is, whether she’s next to a guest or on her own. Her smile isn’t forced, and she genuinely laughs at Grande’s jokes in his episode or gently ribs her father when they’re cooking together.

The recipes Ramsay is making are also doable for the home cook. Sure, some of them take some prep time — in the “Balls” episode, she’s slow-roasting garlic heads and slowly caramelizing onions to make Korean rice balls stuffed with, of all things, mozzarella cheese. She’s OK about things turning out differently than she expected, and does all the steps herself. The middle segment, where Ramsay is off-camera, carries most of the social media conceit, but we’ve seen quickie and oddball recipes like these on many other shows before this.

Sex and Skin: None, besides sexy food shots.

Parting Shot: Ramsay summarizes the recipes she made in the episode, and probably says “Yum!”, which she says a lot.

Sleeper Star: Can food be a sleeper star? Because we wanted to eat everything Tilly made in the two episodes we saw.

Most Pilot-y Line: As we said, Tilly says “Yum!” a lot. We guess it’s something that a 23-year-old might say during a cooking show, but it’s not exactly a catchy catchphrase.

Our Call: STREAM IT. Tilly Ramsay’s sunny presence makes Dish It Out a fun watch, and she makes recipes that are actually achievable for home cooks.
