‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’ Star Jamie Roy Thinks Brian and Julia Are “Quite Sibling-y”: “They Protect Each Other”
One of the most charming storylines in Outlander: Blood of My Blood has been watching a friendship blossom between Claire’s (Caitriona Balfe) mother Julia Moriston (Hermione Corfield) and Jamie’s (Sam Heughan) dad, Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy). The two cross paths at Castle Leathers and bond over trying to maneuver around Brian’s loathsome father, Lord Lovat (Tony Curran).

However, in Outlander: Blood of My Blood Episode 6 “Birthright,” Julia’s desperate scheme to protect her unborn child threatens to blow up this friendship. That’s because Julia has seduced Lord Lovat in order to make the lecherous creep believe he is the father of her baby. As the lie spreads through Castle Leathers, Brian is horrified by the implication that Julia is having his sibling. He’s even more upset to learn that it’s all a lie.
“At Brian’s core, being honest is very, very important to him. So when someone tells a lie to him, especially when he’s put his trust in her, that means a lot,” Jamie Roy told DECIDER. “You know, Brian’s word is his bond, essentially.”
“So, yeah, when Brian finds out that she lied, he’s not quite happy about it.”
Luckily, Brian is able to eventually understand Julia has done it all to protect her baby. “When he realizes the reason, he’s like, ‘Okay, well, I understand.’ And he forgives her and he tells her, to brace for what’s to come.”
“The whole of Episode 6, I mean, that’s just a journey for both of those characters,” Roy said. “With Brian and his father, with Julia giving birth.”
Jamie Roy also told DECIDER that he feels that Brian and Julia share a special bond, comparing them to brother and sister.
“I like to think of their relationship almost quite sibling-y because they’ve got each other, they protect each other in their own ways,” Roy said. “Brian protects her from physical harm. He makes that promise to her when they’re on the carriage in Episode 4. He promises that, I’m going to protect you. She protects him in her own ways, too.”
This week’s installment of Outlander: Blood of My Blood ends with a sweet scene where Brian visits Julia and her newborn baby. Julia confides in Brian that she feels weak without Henry, but knows he would love “Baby Beauchamp” so much. Brian insists Henry will meet the baby and confesses that he’s never celebrated his own birthday because of “shame.” It’s a tender sequence that Roy loved.
“So the way it ends was honestly one of my favorite things to film as an actor because it was just the perfect moment of stillness and calm,” Roy said. “For me and Hermione, but also for Brian and Julia. That was a nice little way to finish off the episode, was that scene.”
So what’s next for Julia, Brian, and “Baby Beauchamp”? We’ll have to tune in to next week’s Outlander: Blood of My Blood to find out.
