my skeptical yet honest review

Dyson is the trusted name we all love and admire for vacuums, purifiers, and hair tools. It has made the world a slightly better place and has made progress with its unique designs, which we rave about, from vacuums we’ve tested to its newly launched haircare products, where the brand is competing in the beauty space.

It’s a bit of a hop for this tech titan to step into the haircare industry, but I see it very much like the Michelin tire company grew its brand and re-imagined the way you saw them by creating a guidebook to help sell more tires and, in the process, building the empire we now know as the coveted Michelin stars.

Dyson is taking the same leap of courage, engineering obsession, and meticulous attention to detail to products I tested firsthand to see if they were worth shopping for. I’ve purchased a Dyson hair dryer and received a special edition Airwrap from my husband, engraved with my name, as a gift from the in-store experience. Both tools I have fallen in love with and feel my hair has, too.

If you want to read up first-hand on Dyson’s hair tools, check out our review on the Airwrap (or our comparison on the Flexstyle vs. Airwrap), Airstraight for smooth hair, or the ultimate Dyson hairdryer, which has cut my drying time in half.

But when it comes to products, I am a fussy woman, and my hair is fickle. I entered this trial with a skeptical heart.

My Review

I have a lot of hair, and it’s super fine. Not to mention bleached out of its mind with chemicals because I like icy-white blonde hair that I need to monitor so it doesn’t turn yellow. It feels like a full-time job, and although it would be easier being brunette again, I just can’t seem to leave my Taylor Swift era.

I tested the Dyson Omega leave-in conditioning spray, Chitosan multi-use styling spray, and Omega hydrating hair oil, a trio designed to take your hair as far as their dryers have taken your style.

Immediately, the first thing I noticed was how light everything was, whether it was misty in a spray or tapped out of the bottle. The oil itself is not tacky or sticky but smooth and smells of fresh air and a field of flowers.

I did feel a little silly when I first tried to open the product because it wasn’t intuitive to me. Perhaps you think about it differently, and it might make logical sense, but I’ll show you how it works below. To open the container, you must first remove the center core to expose the plastic wrapping around the top of the bottle near the spray. Once that is removed, the product will start working. This way, you won’t lose any product in shipping or have someone steal some product at the store before purchasing.

Pros:

  • Reduces hair breakage by up to 73% for all hair types
  • Lightweight, non-greasy formula that absorbs quickly
  • Strengthens hair and improves shine
  • Convenient refill option, more sustainable than buying a new bottle

Cons:

  • Premium price point compared to standard leave-in conditioners

The lightweight formula absorbs quickly without leaving any greasy residue, and my hair immediately felt softer and more manageable. Dyson promises it reduces breakage by up to 73% for all hair types. To be frank, I need more time to test this product over a long period to notice its effects, but I will say that my hair, while styling, did not break off, which is typically the case when I dry each section with a lot of heat.

I also appreciate that this is a refill for the full-size product, making it both convenient and more sustainable. It’s suitable for all hair types, and I found that even after a few uses, my hair felt noticeably stronger and smoother.

Pros:

  • No crunch in my hair, but smooth strands in the desired styling shape
  • Ultra-fine, non-aerosol spray provides even coverage and easy buildability
  • Creates style without making hair stiff or sticky

Cons:

  • May not replace other styling products for those needing extra hold, like myself
  • Slight learning curve for best application (must hold 8 inches away for even coverage)

The spray is ultra-fine and lightweight, allowing it to go on evenly without weighing the hair down. Be sure to hold the bottle about 8 inches away for optimal coverage. I found it worked beautifully in multiple ways: setting a finished style, reviving my look throughout the day, or even restyling dampened sections for a fresh new look, which is helpful when I don’t want to fully shower after working out.

Although it may not have held my curl as long as I preferred, I did notice that my hair felt smooth and healthy after use, thanks to its paraben-free formula, hydrolysed wheat protein, and bamboo extract.

Pros:

  • Lightweight, non-greasy formula that instantly hydrates and nourishes hair
  • Reduces frizz and breakage while adding a high-shine finish
  • Provides heat protection up to 450-degree Faraheneit, ideal for styling
  • Silicone-free and weightless

Cons:

  • A small drop is required for the best results; otherwise, it can look heavy and greasy

I was initially hesitant because I usually avoid oils, but this hydrating hair oil is unlike others I’ve tried, which leave my hair looking absolutely disgusting with oil residue.

Despite being oil-based (can you tell how I feel about oils?), it feels incredibly lightweight and luxurious, instantly hydrating my hair without any greasy residue.

My hair felt nourished from within, frizz was tamed, and breakage was noticeably reduced, all while leaving a brilliant, high-shine finish. However, use it sparingly. Start at the bottom and use it on flyaways. Never place it in the roots of your hair unless you like that ultra-greasy “wet” look.

I also loved that it provides heat protection up to 450-degree Faraheneit, making it ideal for styling protection.

The smell is intoxicating with hints of citrus and jasmine. Overall, very nice.

Final Thoughts

Honestly, I loved the Dyson Omega hydrating hair oil. I found it to be the one ingredient that made the biggest difference in my hair. It helped retain the icy, cool color I try so hard to maintain.

The Dyson Chitosan Multi-use styling spray was also lovely, but I wish it held my curl with shape for longer. My hair typically falls out of a style unless it has been sprayed in place like a helmet, so this is common for me with most sprays. However, I did appreciate the natural bounce it gave it. Think of this more like a French girl look, where they do spend time doing their hair and make up to look like they didn’t spend an hour on it. It’s a thing — believe me!

As for the Dyson Omega hydrating hair oil, I find that it’s best for flyaways and to be used sparingly. Most oils are too heavy for my super fine hair, but they do add shine and can help tame static.

Overall, I’m very pleased and excited to see what else Dyson will unveil over the next few years because these products have all the signs of being a success.

How we tested

I personally used Dyson’s Omega leave-in spray, Chitosan styling spray, and hydrating hair oil on fine, bleached hair to evaluate texture, manageability, and styling results. I paid attention to lightweight feel, absorption, scent, and performance during daily styling and heat exposure. Observations were made on frizz control, breakage reduction, shine and overall hair health.
