Mastodon co-founder and guitarist Brent Hinds was found at fault for his fatal motorcycle crash.
A report from the Atlanta Police Department and obtained by PEOPLE, determined that the musician — who died at the age of 51 on Aug. 20 — was traveling between 63 and 68 mph before the crash.
“After conducting time distance calculations of the Motorcycle and assessing the changes in velocity of the BMW it was deemed that Hinds was traveling between 63 and 68 mph,” the report reads. “Video of the intersection was used for the calculations.”
It continues: “The video clearly depicts the crash. Hinds was at fault for the crash.”

According to the initial police report, Hinds was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.
The latest report contradicts the original Aug. 20 report, which determined that Hinds’ Harley Davidson motorcycle collided with a BMW SUV that didn’t yield while making a turn at an intersection, per Atlanta News First.
According to Atlanta News First, Hinds was going “roughly twice the speed limit at the crash site.”
Per the most recent police report, two witnesses claimed that the late rocker was “driving fast.”
Additionally, an SUV driver and one of the witnesses had conflicting statements about the crash.
According to police, the driver was “positive” the light was green when she made a left turn,” however, the witness claimed the light was red “when he looked at the light when everything happened.”
After the accident, Hinds was “breathing and moving” and had “visible injuries” to his arms, head and torso, and the driver — who was taken to the same hospital as Hinds — had injuries to her arms and head, per the report.
On Aug. 21, a day after the crash, Mastodon shared a statement via Instagram honoring Hinds.
“We are in a state of unfathomable sadness and grief… last night Brent Hinds passed away as a result of a tragic accident,” they wrote, sharing a black-and-white photo of the musician.
Mastodon added: “We are heartbroken, shocked, and still trying to process the loss of this creative force with whom we’ve shared so many triumphs, milestones, and the creation of music that has touched the hearts of so many. Our hearts are with Brent’s family, friends, and fans.”
“At this time, we please ask that you respect everyone’s privacy during this difficult time,” further read the post. “RIP Brent,” they concluded.
Hinds co-founded Mastodon in 2000. However, earlier this year, the heavy metal act announced he was no longer part of the group.
“We’re deeply proud of and beyond grateful for the music and history we’ve shared and we wish him nothing but success and happiness in his future endeavors,” they wrote on Instagram in March.
Meanwhile, Hinds claimed on Instagram that he was kicked out of the “horrible band.”
At the end of August, Hinds was slated to play at the Rare Records recording studio in Winchester, Tenn.
