When Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce Told Friends About Engagement (Exclusive)

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce‘s closest friends didn’t have to wait long to hear about their happy news.

“Taylor and Travis’ friends are thrilled for them, and a lot of them found out about the engagement right after it happened,” a source tells PEOPLE. “Keeping it quiet wasn’t easy but now that it’s out, everyone’s just excited.”

The pop superstar and the Kansas City Chiefs tight end, both 35, revealed their engagement on Aug. 26 with a playful Instagram post that read, “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married 🧨.” They ended the caption with a dynamite emoji, seemingly referencing their “TNT” nickname.

Earlier in August, Kelce popped the question in his backyard in a romantic garden proposal. The ring, which Travis designed with Kindred Lubeck of Artifex Fine Jewelry, features an old mine brilliant cut diamond in a vintage-inspired setting.

The couple’s engagement came nearly two years after they took their romance public, when Swift was first spotted cheering Kelce on at a Kansas City Chiefs game in September 2023. 

Though fans are eager to know more about the wedding plans, the Grammy winner and the Super Bowl champion are in no rush. “Right now they just want to enjoy being engaged, and they are going to take their time with it,” a source previously told PEOPLE.

“It has been a relief not having to keep it a secret anymore and they are glad it is out in the open,” the source added at the time. “Both families are overjoyed. There were toasts, happy tears and everyone is thrilled for them. Friends have been stopping by and sending little gifts. It has all been intimate, nothing over the top.”

Kelce has even acknowledged what’s coming next. On the Sept. 3 episode of his New Heights podcast with brother Jason Kelce, he joked about the whirlwind ahead. “Oh, it’s gonna go crazy,” Travis said of the wedding planning. “That is the next step, yeah, I’ve heard about that.”

“Hopefully, I’m the best man. We’ll see,” Jason said on a recent episode of the Bussin’ with the Boys podcast. “Trav has a lot of friends, I’m just hoping to get the opportunity.”
