The Russo family has a tough road ahead in Wizards Beyond Waverly Place.

The Disney Channel series returns for a second season on Friday, Sept. 12, and on Disney+ on Wednesday, Oct. 8.

The series will see the return of David Henrie (Justin Russo), Janice LeAnn Brown (Billie), Alkaio Thiele (Roman Russo), Max Matenko (Milo Russo), Taylor Cora (Winter) and Mimi Gianopulos (Giada Russo).

In a glimpse at what’s to come on the Wizards of Waverly Place sequel series, a synopsis shared with PEOPLE says, “Billie grapples with the fact that being part of the Russo family might be more complicated than she thought — especially now that she’s not the only wizard in the house.”

“Thanks to Roman and Milo’s new magical powers, Justin is now tasked with training three young wizards for the Family Wizard Competition,” the summary continues. “As the stakes rise inside and outside the family, a mysterious new threat emerges, one that could unravel the Russos forever.”

PEOPLE can exclusively unveil the first look at the season 2 trailer, which kicks off with Justin conducting wizard lessons with Billie, Roman and Milo.

This marks a big change, as Billie had been taking lessons alone before Roman and Milo gained powers.

“Now that the boys have powers, you’re not the only wizard I’m teaching anymore,” says Justin. “I have to get you all ready to compete in the Family Wizard Competition.”

With Roman noting that “only one” of them can be “the Family Wizard and keep our powers,” he proudly declares: “Everyone knows it’s going to be me!”

Billie, however, begs to differ. “I think I’ve got this competition locked up,” she says.

But Billie may have spoken too soon, as Roman appears to be catching up to her level rather quickly. Because of that, she suggests to pal Winter, “I’ve gotta do something.”

Ignoring Winter’s recommendation to “study harder,” Billie says she’s going to “cast a spell” on Roman. Her attempt instantly backfires as she misses hitting Roman with her wand.

“You missed!” Roman says. “You never miss.”

Noticing the changes within Billie, Justin feels it’s as if she “lost her powers.”

“I can’t shake the feeling that something bigger’s going on,” says Justin, while in conversation with his wife, Giada.

The trailer then cuts to a mysterious, dark figure, who shares an ominous proclamation. “I will use all of Billie’s power to fulfill the prophecy,” says the eerie character, as another notes, “The rift will open and evil will reign.”

Worried about what dangers she could cause, Billie notes she doesn’t “want to be the one to destroy the world.” She is then shown escaping into the Wizard World.

Eventually, Justin assures Billie that she’s “not alone anymore” and “never will be.”

Several scenes go on to show the magic and scares to come. There even appears to be a moment where Billie is partaking in normal teenager activities, as she’s seen slow-dancing with a boy at what appears to be a school dance.

Billie later joins the Russos on a trip to somewhere that Justin claims is “totally safe.”

But upon entry, the gang is nearly blasted by someone on the opposite end of the room. That person turns out to be Alex Russo, a.k.a. Selena Gomez.

Gomez’s character, who won her Family Wizard competition in the 2012 Wizards of Waverly Place series finale, was asleep on a couch before being awakened, raising a sleep mask off her eyes.

“Alex? What are you doing here?” asks Justin.

“Oh, I’m sorry,” Alex says sarcastically. “I live here!”

From there, Alex says, “You could’ve given me a heads up before you just showed up at my doorstep.”

“Like the heads up you gave me before you showed up at my doorstep with Billie,” counters Justin, leading Alex to respond, “Touché.”

Wizards Beyond Waverly Place made its debut in October 2024.

The series, created by Todd Greenwald, follows Justin as he lives life among the mortals alongside his wife Giada and sons Roman and Milo, none of whom are aware he is an inactive wizard. But that all changes when Alex drops off Billie, a wizard-in-training, at Justin’s place in hopes of him mentoring the teen.

It’s a sequel series to Wizards of Waverly Place, which ran on the Disney Channel from 2007 to 2012 for four seasons. The original series, starring Gomez’s Alex as a young wizard navigating various misadventures while training for the Family Wizard Competition, also spawned Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie in 2009 and The Wizards Return: Alex vs. Alex in 2013.

In addition to Gomez, Freya Skye, Harvey Guillén, Kirsten Vangsness, Bill Chott, Sean Whalen, Amanda Tepe, Recker Eans, Tobias Jelinek, Patrick Bristow and Eleanor Sweeney round out the new iteration’s season 2 guest stars.

Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas serve as writers and executive producers for the series, from Disney Branded Television, along with executive producers Gary Marsh, Jonas Agin, Rick Williams, Gomez and Henrie.
