Charlie Hunnam is transforming into “history’s most singular ghoul” for his latest project — and now, viewers can officially see him in action.
The former Sons of Anarchy star, 45, takes on the role of serial killer and grave robber Ed Gein in Monster: The Ed Gein Story. Starring alongside Hunnam in the latest season are Laurie Metcalf (as Gein’s mother Augusta), as well as Tom Hollander, Vicky Krieps, Olivia Williams, Lesley Manville, Joey Pollari, Charlie Hall, Tyler Jacob Moore, Mimi Kennedy, Will Brill and Robin Weigert.
Netflix has unveiled its first trailer for the latest iteration of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s chilling anthology series on Thursday, Sept. 4.
The third season of Monster follows the story of Gein, a man referred to as the “Butcher of Plainfield” and known for murder, robbing graves and creating household items and clothing out of remains in the 1950s as he became what a synopsis from the streamer called “a new kind of monster.”
While photos have been snapped on set and Netflix itself has dropped its first look at Hunnam in character last month, its initial trailer marks the first time Hunnam can be seen really diving into the role.
Gein’s life is said to have inspired Psycho, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Silence of the Lambs, as a synopsis from Netflix describes the character as a “serial killer,” “grave robber” and “psycho.”
“In the frozen fields of 1950s rural Wisconsin, a friendly, mild-mannered recluse named Eddie Gein lived quietly on a decaying farm — hiding a house of horrors so gruesome it would redefine the American nightmare,” it reads. “Driven by isolation, psychosis, and an all-consuming obsession with his mother, Gein’s perverse crimes birthed a new kind of monster that would haunt Hollywood for decades.”
His story “didn’t just influence a genre,” according to Netflix, it allowed him to become “the blueprint for modern horror.” Now, fans can see how it plays out in what the streamer describes as Murphy and Brennan’s “most harrowing installment” of Monster.
