A 6-year-old child was hospitalized, and a horse is dead after an Amish horse-drawn wagon carrying eight people was struck by a vehicle in upstate New York, authorities said.

On Monday, Sept. 1, around 5:37 p.m. local time, troopers responded to a report of a crash on Route 5 close to Bellinger Road in Danube, a town of less than 1,000 people in Herkimer County, the New York State Police said in a news release.

A preliminary investigation revealed that 73-year-old Laurie M. Callan was driving east in a 2012 Dodge behind a horse-drawn wagon when she hit the rear of the buggy. The wagon, which was hitched to two horses, left the road and all eight passengers on board were ejected, authorities said.

Callan’s vehicle flipped over and landed in the westbound lane.

Following the crash, a 6-year-old boy who was riding on the wagon was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Callahan took herself to another hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, state police said.

Daniel Stoltzfus, the 31-year-old driver of the wagon, and the other passengers weren’t injured. One of the two horses was killed in the crash. Officials said the animal was removed from the scene by its owner.

Callahan was given citations for following too closely, failure to exercise due care to avoid a collision with a horse on the highway, and unreasonable speed, according to authorities.
