Yankees’ Jose Caballero gets ejected in fiery scene against Astros

HOUSTON — Starting for only the second time in a week, José Caballero earned a quick hook from the home plate umpire on Tuesday night.

Caballero got ejected in the fourth inning against the Astros for arguing after he was hit by a pitch from Framber Valdez, but went around on his swing, with umpire Ramon De Jesus ruling it a strike.

The utilityman did not get much of a leash with his argument, as he was tossed before Aaron Boone could get to the plate to shield him.

But it was a brutal spot for Caballero to get his second ejection as a Yankee, on a night when he was starting at third base for his right-handed bat against the lefty Valdez.

Caballero, who had doubled and stole third in his first at-bat, was likely to move to the outfield by the end of the night, too, as a defensive replacement for Giancarlo Stanton. But instead, he hit the showers early with Ryan McMahon replacing him at third base.

The first time Caballero got tossed as a Yankee came on Aug. 20 against the Rays — when he argued getting thrown out at second base on a steal attempt — which also put the Yankees in a tough spot, forcing Stanton to play the field in extra innings.
