Sen. Cory Booker is engaged to his “best friend,” Alexis Lewis.

On Sept. 2, the Democratic New Jersey lawmaker announced his engagement to Lewis in an Instagram post, featuring several photos from their romantic beachside proposal.

“Alexis is one of the greatest unearned blessings of my life,” he captioned the post. “She has transformed me, helping me to ground and center my inner life, and discover the joys of building a nurturing home with someone you love.”

He added, “I’m thrilled to share: Alexis and I are engaged!”

Prior to announcing their engagement, Booker had been relatively private about their romance. However, during a June 2025 appearance on The Shade Room, he was asked about navigating the dating scene as a former presidential candidate, given that any romantic connection would also be entering the political scene.

“Forget about the future. You want to be with somebody that you’re present and connected [with],” he said. “Should I ever decide to run for president again, that is a challenging thing for any relationship. But, my thing is to find someone who is my best friend now. … Who is my lover, who is my person who can best ground me and inspire me at the same time, where we are real partners and have a real partnership for the real journey in life.”

So, who is Sen. Cory Booker’s fiancée? Here’s everything to know about Alexis Lewis.

During his June 2025 appearance on The Shade Room, Booker confirmed that his girlfriend (whom he did not name) was not in the public eye, but rather works as a real estate agent. He also opened up about how their love story began.

“We were fixed up by a friend,” he said. “I at first said, ‘No,’ I was not interested,’ because she lives in L.A. and I live in New Jersey and D.C.”

Booker added, “Her family grew up in D.C., so it made it a lot easier.”

In an interview published in August 2025, Booker chatted with Washington Examiner‘s congress and campaigns editor David Sivak about TikTok and recalled the time his then-girlfriend asked him to open up his “For You” page during the early days of their relationship.

“I sort of held my breath as I opened it up, and she could see that I’m a nerd who loves food videos, animal videos,” Booker said. “It was just a funny moment, because I never thought of it through the dating lens.”

In doing so, he also provided some clarity about the timeline of their romance saying, “Here it is, you know, a year and a half later, and we’re still together.”

Elsewhere in the conversation, Booker shared that he and Lewis were now living together in Washington.

Elsewhere in his appearance on The Shade Room, Booker was asked whether he did background checks or extensive research on the woman he was dating. While he didn’t name Lewis, he shared that he had learned a little bit about Lewis before they met.

“Who goes on a date anymore without doing a full Google search on somebody?” he said. “I got everything I could get on her off the internet, I did not employ the FBI in my dating.”

Meanwhile, Lewis went on the date without looking up Booker.

“Her friends kept on saying, ‘Did you know this about him?” he recalled, noting that she wanted to “meet him as he is.”

Booker also opened up about why dating while in the public eye was a little bit harder, saying, “I’ve gone on a first date with somebody and some photographer in a New York restaurant takes a picture and I’m on Page Six.”

“It definitely is harder, but I feel like this relationship has been great,” the politician said, adding that it has “developed in a wonderful way.”

On Sept. 2, Booker shared a heartfelt Instagram post about Lewis while announcing their engagement.

“I am savoring the soul-affirming wonder of everyday life with my partner, best friend, and now my fiancée,” he wrote in the caption.

“We are excited for this journey ahead, having so much fun, and feeling deeply grateful for the love, support, and energy so many of you have shared with us,” Booker added. “We are truly blessed to be surrounded by such a beautiful community lifting us in love and commitment.”

Two months before announcing his engagement, Booker shared on The Shade Room that he had “very big ambitions to get married.”

“I want to be married, I still want to have kids,” he said.

When asked why he wasn’t married with kids yet, Booker said he hadn’t met the “right” fit before.

“I’m so happy that both me and my significant other now, if we had met each other five years ago, I don’t think we would’ve connected like we’re connecting now,” he said, noting that he wasn’t good at “prioritizing relationships” when he was mayor.

“Newark was my relationship, and everything else was secondary,” he said. “I thought happiness was a byproduct of being in your purpose, and that I could put off that joy. Now as a senator, I realize, wait a minute, ‘Be happy now. Find your joy now.’ … ‘Now is the time you should have meaningful relationships. Now is the time you should honor your friends and your significant other.’ ”

Booker continued, “I thought that would weaken me in my professional work, it has empowered me. Dating her has made me so much of a better senator.”
