Shaquille O’Neal showed his incredible generosity recently when he surprised a young athlete with a brand-new car.
O’Neal, 53, said he was instantly impressed when he saw a few videos online of Tamara Humphries on the mat, and he wanted to reach out to see how he could support her dreams.
“So I called her parents,” he said in a video shared on Instagram.
Eighteen-year-old Humphries, whose wrestling name is Firefly, told KDKA Radio it was just “a casual Tuesday” when the NBA legend reached out to her and her parents.
“He was like, ‘Hey are you interested in any sponsorships or anything like that? Can I get in touch with your parents?’ ” she recalled.
Humphries said she immediately told her sister and the two were “screaming for like five minutes straight” after O’Neal reached out.
“He was like, ‘What do you need? What’s something that’s holding you back right now?’ ” Humphries shared.
She said she told O’Neal she had just taken the entire summer off from wrestling to work so that she could pay for a car to get her to practice and tournaments. “My mom was like, ‘My daughter has been working really hard to get a car, and he was like, ‘Okay well let me know what car you want.’ ”
Humphries said she was shocked by O’Neal’s reply.
In his Instagram video, O’Neal said he would pay for the entire car and delivery to Humphries on a FaceTime call with her. The young wrestler was beaming when she answered the call.
Humphries drove away in a 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander and thanked O’Neal in a thoughtful Instagram post.
“After struggling to get to practice, not making tournaments due to the distance, Ubers and Lyfts back and forth from college, I was blessed with a Mitsubishi Outlander 2025 from the one and only SHAQUILLE O’NEAL @shaq with the help of the amazing @effortless_motors crew at @palmpalmpgh ,” she wrote.
She added, “Thank you God, thank you family, and most importantly thank YOU for believing in me. I couldn’t do anything without the love support you all drown me in. I will not let you down if you continue to trust me. God is good. We made it everyone, and it’s only the beginning.”
