- Reagan Revord’s debut novel, Rules for Fake Girlfriends, is out now
- In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, the actor says that their “biggest accomplishment” is getting their Young Sheldon costar, Montana Jordan, to read the book
- Revord wrote parts of the novel while on set and says being on the sitcom helped prepare them for becoming an author
Raegan Revord is stepping into new terrain as an author.
The actor, 17, caught up with PEOPLE ahead of the Sept. 2 release of their debut novel, Rules for Fake Girlfriends. Revord began writing the young adult rom-com, about a college student thrown into a fake dating scheme, while on the set of their hit sitcom Young Sheldon.
“I had to learn how to switch between different mindsets with a flick of a switch,” Revord, who played Missy Cooper on the show for seven seasons, said. “I would go from being in a scene to doing school for 10 minutes and then go right back to my scene. That really helped prepare me for being able to write.”

Now that the book is out, Revord is anticipatory of readers’ reactions — but especially that of Montana Jordan, who played Missy’s brother Georgie on Young Sheldon and its spin-off series Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage.
“He’s not a reader, but he did tell me that he would read my book,” Revord says. “And I was very honored. I was like, ‘Oh my God, I’m going to get you to read something.’”
Revord says that they’re also inviting the whole Young Sheldon cast to their book events in Los Angeles, and that their castmates have had their back from the beginning.

“They saw me go through the whole [writing] process over the two years when I was on set,” Revord says. “They know the struggles I went through. They’re very involved in it.”
“I’m just honored I’m getting Montana to read something, really,” Revord adds. “That’s my biggest accomplishment in life.”
Revord, who also helms the book club Read with Raegan, previously told PEOPLE that publishing a book had always been a dream of theirs. And though penning a novel for young adults while still being a teenager had its perks, Revord also noted how daunting the writing process was for a debut author.
“I learned to not be afraid to ask people questions because I didn’t want it to seem like I didn’t know what I was doing,” Revord says. “I wanted to seem like I was in the know, but then I was like, ‘This is my first time doing this. I should have questions. I’m not in the know about this stuff.’”

It’s a similar message that they want readers to take away from the novel, which follows a college student finding her footing after the death of her mother.
“Give it time,” Revord says of the book’s message. “Even if you don’t know what you want to do at the current moment, at some point you will. Just go with it, go with what you want, go with what you’re feeling and you’ll figure it out.”
Rules for Fake Girlfriends is now available from Wednesday Books, an imprint of Macmillan Publishers, wherever books are sold.
