Lola Tung is taking some dating tips from The Summer I Turned Pretty.
As the Prime Video hit nears the end of its third and final season, the 22-year-old actress reflected on growing up with her character, Belly Conklin, in a recent interview with Nylon. Before she landed the role, Tung remembered reading author Jenny Han’s series of novels that inspired the show while she was a student at Carnegie Mellon University.
“There was a really dramatic single tear that rolled down my cheek,” Tung says. “I love this world so much. If I wasn’t in this show, I would watch this.”

The complicated romantic dynamics in TSITP have stirred up a lot of discourse among fans.
The story follows Belly as she navigates adolescence and a love triangle between her childhood best friends, brothers Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) and Conrad Fisher (Christopher Briney). In season 3, she gets engaged to Jeremiah but continues to grapple with her feelings for Conrad in secret until it all comes crashing down on her wedding day.
While Tung admitted that she mostly stays offline “because sometimes I can get really heated about stuff,” she thinks Belly is “just misunderstood.”
She added that her favorite type of movies and TV shows are ones “where you see flawed human female characters.”
“Sometimes you’re frustrated with them, but you keep watching because you’re like, ‘This is so raw and interesting to watch,’” she noted.
When it comes to her own dating life, Tung said she doesn’t relate much to Belly, but she has learned from what the character has gone through.
“It’s hard out here,” she quipped. “I’m not an apps girl. They’ve always scared me, even in my college days. My friends would be like, ‘Let’s play Tinder,’ and scroll through their Tinders. I’d be like, ‘OK, I’ll just look over your shoulder.’”
“I’m of the mindset of, ‘it’ll happen if it’s right,’” she continued. “I’m hyper-independent, which is good and also sometimes not great. But some men need more time to grow, which is what we also learned from Summer. We’re so quick to try to rush things in life. One of my friends was like, ‘I can’t wait until we’re in our 30s and we’re… whatever.’ But I’m like, ‘Don’t rush it! We’re 22. We can take our time.’”

The final three episodes of the coming-of-age series will see Belly living in Paris after she and Jeremiah called off their wedding.
In the trailer, Belly meets a new group of friends (and possibly even a boy) as she aims “to find the person that I can be.”
“I had these pillars in my life — Cousins, my family, Taylor, Jere,” she said. “They made me feel like I was safe, like I was on solid ground. Now they’re gone. And it’s just me.”
At the end of the preview, however, viewers hear Conrad’s voice say, “Dear Belly,” as she stands speechless at a dramatic letter from her first love.
