NEED TO KNOW

- The cast also includes Arian Moayed, Este Haim, Elizabeth Berkley, Ziwe and Kaia Gerber
Elisabeth Moss falls under Kate Hudson‘s stylish spell in the campy first trailer for Shell.
Directed by Moss’ Handmaid’s Tale costar Max Minghella, Shell is about a once-beloved actress named Samantha Lake (Moss) who is “desperate to reclaim her career,” per a synopsis, but is getting passed over for younger stars.
Soon, Samantha is “drawn into the glamorous world of wellness mogul Zoe Shannon (Hudson) — only to uncover a monstrous truth beneath its flawless surface,” the synopsis teases.
In addition to Hudson, 46, and Moss, 43, the cast includes Arian Moayed, Este Haim, Elizabeth Berkley, Ziwe and Kaia Gerber.

Shell premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2024, when director Minghella, 39, told PEOPLE that Hudson was his top choice for the role of Zoe Shannon.
“There wasn’t really anybody else I could really think of who would bring that kind of innate charisma and self-possession to it,” he said.
Minghella added that it was “incredibly important” to the team to make sure “the movie never took itself seriously.”
“We really wanted to make a great piece of popcorn entertainment which also happens to have some ideas in it,” he says. “I think the dream for us would be — and this is what we always talked about — was we’d hopefully deliver a movie that will provide real escapism from your life, but then on the drive home, you start to maybe reflect.”
Shell is in select theaters and on digital Oct. 3.
