Superman fans are in luck: filmmaker James Gunn has a title and release date for the movie’s sequel.

Nearly two months after Gunn’s rendition of Superman — starring David Corenswet, Nicholas Hoult and Rachel Brosnahan — rejuvenated DC Studios fans’ excitement, Gunn, 59, revealed on Instagram Wednesday, Sept. 3, that the next movie in the franchise will be titled Man of Tomorrow.

Man of Tomorrow. In theatres July 9, 2027,” Gunn wrote in his Instagram post, which he shared along with a drawing of Superman and his archenemy Lex Luthor by DC Comics executive and artist Jim Lee. The drawing, which Lee signed as from 2025, shows Luthor, whom Hoult, 35, played in the recent movie, wearing a super-powered suit, while Superman — as portrayed by Corenswet, 32, on the big screen — leans against his foe and holds a screwdriver.

While it’s unclear what Man of Tomorrow‘s storyline may include, Gunn tagged Corenswet and Hoult in the post. Variety previously reported in July that both Corenswet and Brosnahan had options in their contracts to reprise their roles for a sequel.

In August, Gunn told The Hollywood Reporter that he had “already finished the treatment for the next story in what I’ll call the ‘Superman Saga’ ” and that he hoped to go into production on the movie “not too far away from today.”

The filmmaker, who is in charge of DC Studios’ cinematic universe at large in addition to writing and directing Superman movies himself, has been cagey about what a follow-up to Superman may actually look like. In a Threads conversation with fans on July 31, Gunn wrote that he was “sequel writing” following Superman‘s press tour, but he noted that film he was working on should not necessarily be considered Superman 2

“This is the same movie. Superman has a major role. It’s not Superman 2,” Gunn wrote at the time. When one user asked whether the movie is “a direct sequel to Superman” or not, Gunn added, “I’m not sure how you define ‘direct sequel.’ I pretty much think of Peacemaker Season 2 as a direct sequel.”

Gunn and DC Studios have two additional movies planned in the larger DC cinematic universe before
Man of Tomorrow releases in theaters on July 9, 2027. Supergirl, which stars Milly Alcock as Superman’s cousin Kara Zor-El/Supergirl following her cameo appearance in Superman, lands in theaters June 26, 2026. Clayface, which stars Tom Rhys Harries as the title character, is scheduled to release Sept. 11, 2026.
