Bridesmaids Shocked as Bride Expects Them to Cover $5,000 Wedding Costs
NEED TO KNOW
- A friend of a bridesmaid is sharing her pal’s story of a bride who assumed her bridesmaids would cover the cost of her wedding on Reddit
- The bride even suggested adding to the bridal party so she could have a bigger wedding
- Ultimately, some of the bridesmaids dropped out and the couple had to hold a smaller affair
A bride’s over-the-top expectations for her bridesmaids ended up alienating her friends.
In a post on Reddit’s wedding shaming forum, a woman recalled a wedding her friend was a bridesmaid for — one where the bride expected her wedding party to fund the whole elaborate affair. The usually “level-headed” bride assigned various expensive costs to each bridesmaid and even considered adding more bridesmaids to accommodate a larger wedding.
The bride was around 40, generally regarded as calm, a wonderful mother and a dear friend, the woman wrote. This would be her first wedding, and she had only been a maid of honor once — to her goddaughter.

The woman’s bridesmaid friend was also getting married around the same time, she said, but still agreed to be a part of the bride’s wedding. “You do what you can for the people you love,” the woman wrote, so the bridesmaid started to help plan the event.
“It suddenly becomes very clear that she expects the bridesmaids to fund the entire event,” the woman wrote. “She asks my friend to pay for the DJ and the photographer. She asks for similar big ticket items to be paid for by the other bridesmaids and even casually mentions adding more bridesmaids so they can have a bigger wedding.”
The bride expected roughly $5,000 in contribution to her wedding from her bridesmaids. When the woman’s bridesmaid friend approached the bride and explained that her expectations were unreasonable, the bride “flipped out,” because when she was a maid of honor, she said she contributed greatly to the wedding.

“She came away from [her goddaughter’s wedding] assuming that weddings were afforded by outsourcing costs to the wedding party,” the woman wrote.
The bridesmaid later dropped out of the wedding, and as far as the woman knows, the bride and bridesmaid haven’t spoken since.
One comment asked if the other bridesmaids ended up absorbing the costs as the bride wanted. Not at all, the woman said — in fact, most dropped out and the couple had to wait and hold a much smaller wedding as a result.
