Sin City is ready for Ashlee Simpson Ross.

After releasing her last album, Bittersweet World, 17 years ago, Simpson Ross, 40, mostly put her music career on pause to focus on her family: daughter Jagger, 10, and son Ziggy, 4, who she shares with husband Evan Ross, 37, and son Bronx, 16, whose father is her ex, Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz.

But now that her kids are older, Simpson Ross has pressed play again with her I Am Me residency, named after her 2005 second album, the follow-up to her 2004 debut, Autobiography. The show runs for select dates through Sept. 27 at the Venetian Resort’s Voltaire nightclub in Las Vegas.

“I haven’t played a full set in like 20 years, so I’m so excited,” Simpson Ross, who’s performing her hits from “Pieces of Me” to “La La” and beyond, tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue. “This just felt like the right opportunity to dive back into it and relive this old music.”

In the years she’s been away from music, Simpson Ross found a new fan under her own roof in daughter Jagger, who’s “always listening to ‘L.O.V.E.’ and stuff with her friends,” says the mom of three.

She adds, “The fact that my daughter and her friends are revisiting this music, I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh, what a moment.’ She actually just came to my rehearsal the other day, and she was like, ‘Mom, you sound so good.’ For me, that’s everything.”

Simpson Ross and Jagger have long connected through music. “She’s definitely influenced me to get up here and go again,” she says. “We dance together, we get free, we let our bodies go. We do our little modern dances. We sing together. So I’m definitely looking forward to making her proud.”

Returning to the stage feels “a bit like a comeback” for Simpson Ross, but the schedule of her career looks a little different this time around.

“I am still dropping everyone at school and organizing the schedules of all my kids in between rehearsal,” she says. “But it definitely is a comeback in a sense of coming back to myself, coming back to something I love to do, something I’m passionate about, and something I’ve truly missed in my life.”

The “Shadow” artist continues, “I miss performing. I miss music. And I also want to share that with my kids like, ‘This is also a part of Mommy.’ I’m not just an Uber mommy driver.”

Fans can also look forward to new material from Simpson Ross in the future. “I am writing music, and it’ll be a fun little surprise when it comes,” she teases.
