5 Injured After Bus for Special Needs Children Crashes

Two students and three adults were injured when a bus used to transport special needs students collided with an SUV this week in Pennsylvania, police said.

The Bethlehem Township Police Department responded to the incident, which involved a passenger vehicle in addition to the bus, around 4:35 p.m. local time on Tuesday, Sept. 2, the authorities said in a statement. The crash occurred at an intersection in Bethlehem Township, located in Northampton County.

The police’s preliminary investigation has determined the passenger vehicle was stopped in a westbound lane, waiting to make a left turn to drive south. The school bus was traveling westbound as it approached the intersection.

“At some point in time the bus collided with the rear of the stopped vehicle that was waiting to make the left turn,” police said. “Both vehicles sustained moderate disabling crash damage as a result of the collision and required towing.”

The school bus is affiliated with the Colonial Intermediate Unit 20, which drives special needs students for local school districts, police added. The victims included two student passengers, along with a school bus aid, the school bus driver and the driver of the passenger vehicle.

They were all transported to the Emergency Room of St. Luke’s Hospital – Anderson Campus for evaluation, but none of their injuries were life threatening, police said.

In addition to police, emergency workers from Bethlehem Township Volunteer Fire Company, Nancy Run Fire Company and paramedics from Bethlehem Township EMS also responded to the incident.

Police said the circumstances of the crash remain under investigation.
