Utah I-15 crash kills 3 after driver in her 90s goes wrong way

Three people were killed after a woman in her 90s, driving the wrong way down a highway, crashed head-on into another vehicle in Utah, authorities said.

The elderly driver in a Cadillac sedan was heading south on the northbound lanes of Interstate 15 when she collided with a Toyota Highlander at around 6:15 p.m. on Sunday, the Utah Highway Patrol (UHP) said.

The woman behind the wheel of the Cadillac — who was the only person in the car — died of her injuries at the scene, near the city of St. George, close to the Arizona border.

A woman and a man who were in the Highlander were also killed, the UHP said.

Two female backseat passengers in their late teens to early 20s were airlifted to the hospital, where their injuries are said to be non-life-threatening, according to police.

The Cadillac’s driver turned onto I-15 at Exit 5 and went the wrong way for a mile before the fatal crash.

Police were alerted immediately to reports of the vehicle driving south on the northbound lanes, but weren’t able to stop the collision.

“The call came out, and within a minute or two, the collision occurred. It happened so fast and there was really no time,” UHP Sgt. Joe Pastor told Fox 13.
