The Democratic New Jersey lawmaker, 56, announced his engagement to Alexis Lewis alongside photos from their romantic beach proposal in an Instagram post on Tuesday, Sept. 2.
“Alexis is one of the greatest unearned blessings of my life. She has transformed me, helping me to ground and center my inner life, and discover the joys of building a nurturing home with someone you love,” Booker wrote. “I’m thrilled to share: Alexis and I are engaged!”
Booker continued to praise his new fiancée, whose Instagram account is private.
“I am savoring the soul-affirming wonder of everyday life with my partner, best friend, and now my fiancée,” he shared. “We are excited for this journey ahead, having so much fun, and feeling deeply grateful for the love, support, and energy so many of you have shared with us. We are truly blessed to be surrounded by such a beautiful community lifting us in love and commitment.”
Booker sported a maile lei in the photos, while Lewis’ lei was made up of vibrant plumerias. The couple beamed in every shot. In the first photo, Booker points to Lewis’ engagement ring. The politician confirmed he was in a serious relationship last month, more than three years after his split from actress Rosario Dawson. PEOPLE confirmed that the former couple called it quits on their relationship of more than two years in February 2022.
While chatting about TikTok with Washington Examiner‘s congress and campaigns editor David Sivak in an interview published on Thursday, Aug. 21, Booker recalled a story in which his then-girlfriend asked him to open his “For You” page on one of their first dates.
“I sort of held my breath as I opened it up, and she could see that I’m a nerd who loves food videos, animal videos,” Booker told the outlet before adding of Lewis, “It was just a funny moment, because I never thought of it through the dating lens, but here it is, you know, a year and a half later, and we’re still together.”
Booker also shared that he and Lewis live together in Washington.
