Meghan Markle Shares Rare Video with ‘Beautiful’ Mom to Celebrate Her Birthday

Meghan Markle is celebrating a momentous occasion!

On Tuesday, Sept. 2, the Duchess of Sussex marked her mother Doria Ragland‘s birthday with a sweet Instagram Stories tribute.

Meghan posted a boomerang of herself smiling from ear to ear as she kissed her mom on the cheek. She decorated the video with pink hearts and wrote in white text, “Happy Birthday to my beautiful mom!”

The clip was backed by Stevie Wonder’s 1980 hit “Happy Birthday.”

Meghan and Ragland share a close relationship. When Meghan was young, Ragland gave her the nickname “Flower.” The sweet nickname was revealed in Meghan’s now-defunct lifestyle blog The Tig.

At the time, Meghan listed her many nicknames as “Meg, MM, M&M, and Flower (which my mom has called me since I was little).”

Ragland often traveled from her home state of California to visit her daughter and son-in-law, Prince Harry, while they were still living in the U.K. She was present for many of their family’s milestone moments, including the 2018 royal wedding and the birth of their son Archie in 2019.

Meghan’s longtime friend and makeup artist Daniel Martin previously told PEOPLE in 2019 that “Meghan draws a lot of strength from her mother.”

“Doria is classy, chic and confident, but not unapproachable. I definitely feel Meghan gets a lot of that from her mother,” said Martin.

Ragland spoke out for the first time in Meghan and Prince Harry’s 2022 Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan, during which she admitted that “the last five years have been challenging.”

Ragland also recalled how Meghan told her she was dating the Duke of Sussex.

“We were on the phone and she says, ‘Mommy, I’m going out with Prince Harry,’ and I start whispering, ‘Oh my God.’ And so it was from the beginning, it was very sort of, ‘Oh my God, nobody can know,’ ” she said in Harry & Meghan.

Upon first meeting him, though, Ragland noticed he was “handsome” and “really nice,” with “really great manners.”

“And they looked really happy together. Once it was announced that they were together, it seemed kind of like a novelty,” she said.
