Martha Plimpton has only watched ‘The Goonies’ once
This “Goonies” star has no interest in revisiting the beloved movie 40 years later.
During an interview with People published Tuesday, Sept. 2, Martha Plimpton revealed why she has only rewatched the classic adventure film “once” since its premiere back in 1985.
“Nope. I don’t watch it,” Plimpton, 54, told the outlet. “I’ve seen it once, and that’s good.”
“I don’t know what to tell you,” she added with a laugh.
However, there is one project that Plimpton doesn’t mind returning to all these years later.
“A few months ago I was curious to watch ‘Parenthood,’ and I did,” the actress said of the 1989 dramedy that she starred in with Steve Martin, Joaquin Phoenix, Keanu Reeves and Dianne Wiest.
“That’s a really lovely movie,” she noted.
But despite her refusal to rewatch “The Goonies,” Plimpton was happy to reunite with her former co-stars at Awesome Con in Washington, DC, earlier this year.
The “Raising Hope” actress attended the annual pop culture convention back in April, and she was joined by fellow Goonies (Mikey), Corey Feldman (Mouth), Kerri Green (Andy), Robert Davi (Jake) and Joe Pantoliano (Francis Fratelli).
Josh Brolin (Brandon), Ke Huy Quan (Data) and Jeff Cohen (Chunk) did not make the event.
During the panel, Plimpton and the rest of the original cast confirmed their interest in returning for the “Goonies” sequel, which is currently “moving in the right direction” with Steven Spielberg and original writer Chris Columbus attached, according to Deadline.
“I think [fans are] going to see ‘The Goonies 2,’ whether we’re in it or not,” Plimpton, who portrayed Stef in the original, said during Awesome Con. “I think that’s pretty obvious. At least, I hope [they] will.”
Feldman, meanwhile, agreed and said that he was excited for a potential “Goonies” sequel four decades after the original’s release.
“We love that Steven Spielberg is engaged and back in the ‘Goonies’ mindset, so that’s exciting for all of us, and whatever happens, we hope that it’s worth it,” the “Stand By Me” star, 54, said at the time.
But Plimpton and Feldman’s remarks came as a surprise, because both stars had dispelled talk about a rumored “Goonies” sequel just a few months earlier.
“People, there is no Goonies2 script, there is no one ‘attached,’ Spielberg is not directing, it’s not real,” the “Task” actress wrote on Instagram in September 2024.
“2’SDAY, IS #GOONIES2 REAL?! EVERY1 IS ASKING… I CAN OFFICIALLY TELL U 100% NO! I HAV NO INFO THAT A SEQUEL IS IN THE WORKX,” Feldman added.
“The Goonies” was directed by Richard Donner, who passed away in 2021 at age 91.
Spielberg created the story for the classic family flick, which follows a group of neighborhood kids living in Astoria, Oregon, who head out on a dangerous adventure to save their neighborhood.
The film garnered an impressive $125 million at the worldwide box office, and it has since become a cult classic over the course of the last 40 years.
