Girl Goes Viral for Asking Mom to Attend Taylor Swift-Travis Kelce Wedding

- A 6-year-old girl went viral on Instagram after her mom explained that their family will not be invited to Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding
- “I feel like a lot of people could benefit from hearing this conversation today,” said her mom, Abby Thomason, who had to explain the concept of parasocial relationships to her daughters
- Swift and Kelce announced their engagement on Aug. 26
A 6-year-old Taylor Swift fan is grappling with a disappointment that many will soon face.
Abby Thomason was driving with her two young daughters, ages 3 and 6, when the eldest asked her younger sister, “Do you wanna come to Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce‘s wedding?” Thomason, an early childhood play therapist, then had to break the tough news that they are almost certainly not on the guest list — and documented it in a now-viral Instagram Reel.
After her 6-year-old posed the question, her 3-year-old replied, “Yes,” and Thomason stepped in to say, “I don’t know if we’re going to be invited.” Just a second later, she clarified: “Actually, I know we are not going to be invited.”
The therapist then asked the 6-year-old — who comes from a family of longtime Swifties and hardcore Kansas City Chiefs fans, per Newsweek — why she thinks they will go without an invitation, to which she replied, “Because they don’t know us.”

After her daughter inquired about whether any of their other family members will receive an invite, Thomason had to once again break disappointing news. “No,” the mom said in the Reel. “Nobody we know knows them.”
“Everybody knows Taylor Swift!” the 6-year-old then said, to which her mom rebutted: “Yes, but Taylor Swift doesn’t know everybody else, you know? It feels like we know her.”
The concept of a parasocial relationship, Thomason later told Newsweek, was not something she expected to have to explain to her little ones that day — it just happened.
“It’s just the path that the conversation went,” the therapist told the outlet, “so we processed through it.” Added Thomason: “It’s a hard concept for a 6-year-old to understand, and I thought, honestly, I feel like a lot of people could benefit from hearing this conversation today.”
Commenters on the video, which amassed more than 260,000 likes, agreed with the latter statement, writing things like, “Fighting parasocial relationships one reality check at a time 😂,” and “You know what. I think a lot of adults need to hear this conversation too. 😂.” Another joked: “Had the exact same conversation with my 27-year-old daughter.”
Other users confirmed that they did need to hear Thomason’s words themselves, writing, “This is the reality check I needed.”
Still others lauded the way the 6-year-old decided to move on from the conversation about Swift and Kelce’s nuptials. After her mom explained that they “see pictures” of the pop superstar “and listen to her music, so it makes you feel like you know her but we don’t really know her as a person,” the 6-year-old responded, “Oh. … Anyway, let’s put on ‘Hot to Go!’ ”
“‘Oh. Anyway….. LETS PUT ON HOT TO GO!’ 🤣,” one user wrote, while another said, “I’m gonna start ending a lot more conversations with song suggestions. ‘Anyway let’s put on Hot To Go!’ ”

As for why she decided to post the clip — which is “definitely outside” her “typical content” — Thomason told Newsweek she wanted to feed into the excitement surrounding the Grammy winner and NFL star’s engagement.
“But it was an exciting day, so I decided to post to celebrate with everyone else that was excited,” she told the outlet, adding, “Plus, I just loved the conversation we had, and I love that I’ll have that moment time-capsuled forever.”
