David Byrne is walking down the aisle soon.
The former Talking Heads frontman, 73, announced on his Instagram Stories on Monday, Sept. 1, that he will marry his fiancée, Mala Gaonkar, 55, “this week,” less than three weeks after he revealed their engagement. He also shared his personally curated wedding reception playlist.
“I’m getting married this week and made an almost entirely instrumental playlist while our guests eat an amazing and spicy dinner,” Byrne wrote, sharing a link to his 42-song and nearly two and a half hour-long Apple Music playlist entitled “Dinner Music.” The playlist cover image is a close-up shot of lettuce.

“My sense is that words & lyrics can be distracting – the ear goes to them, especially if it’s a song one knows,” Byrne continued. “So, I opted for buoyant instrumentals that will create a hopeful and joyous atmosphere… and that folks can also ignore at the same time.”
Latin music is heavily featured on the playlist, including songs: “Pa Japón” by El Alfa, “La Escopeta del Hombre Plebeyo” and “En el Caribe Estoy Triste” by Meridian Brothers, “El Gavilan Mayor” by Romperayo, “Canales” by Mexican Institute of Sound, “Perfidia” by Café Tacvba, and “Chimborazo” and “Luz de Luna” by marimba-punk group Son Rompe Pera.
A few other artists featured are T Bone Burnett, Matthieu Saglio, Brian Eno and Post Malone.

Last month, Bryne subtly announced his engagement to Gaonkar when he referred to her as his “fiancée” while chatting with The Times about his upcoming Sept. 5 album Who Is The Sky? and the origin of its ninth track, “Moisturizing Thing.”

“My fiancée will sometimes come at me with greasy hands, ready to smear my face. And at one point I thought, ‘What if I wake up and really looked younger?’ ” the musician said in his interview, which was published on Aug. 16. “But there’s a message, too. About how people judge us by the way we look. You learn a lesson you didn’t expect at the start.”

Byrne and Gaonkar co-wrote an immersive theater performance for the Stanford Arts Institute in 2016. A few years later, the pair collaborated again on another theatrical experience in 2022. Over the years, they have attended several events together — most recently, a special screening for My Mother’s Wedding in August.
The wedding news comes just four days before Byrne will release his new album alongside the Ghost Train Orchestra.
Byrne told PEOPLE in a recent interview, published on Tuesday, Sept. 2, that early feedback to Who Is The Sky? has been positive.
“The reaction I’ve gotten from people is they said, ‘Oh, we need this right now. This is what we need right now,’ which I take it to mean that it’s an album that’s playful,” Byrne said.

“It’s a lot of joy and all that in the record,” he continued. “And I think people see that as a resistance or a pushback to what they see and what I see is happening in the world. So a lot of things where we’re all divisive and separated from one another, and the record is in some ways a counterforce to that.”
After his wedding, Byrne will embark on a tour in North America through the end of the year before heading to Australia and Europe in 2026. The first stop is in Providence, R.I., on Sunday, Sept. 14.
