Utah Tech University’s Police Department responded to a 911 call around 5:42 p.m. local time on Sunday, Aug. 31, police said in a statement shared with PEOPLE by a university spokesperson. The call came from outside of the university’s student housing.

Upon arrival at the scene, the UTPD found that Jordon Konanui-Kong, a freshman, had fallen from the balcony of his room in Campus View Suites II. The St. George Fire Department also responded to the incident, Chief Robert Stoker tells PEOPLE via email.

“Don, as he goes by, was transported to St. George Regional Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries,” police said, adding an investigation into the circumstances of his death is ongoing.

Officials did not provide additional details about the events preceding Konanui-Kong’s fall.

When reached for comment, a university spokesperson said the school and the Utah Tech Police Department are not answering specific questions about the case at this time in order to avoid slowing down the investigation.
