Padma Lakshmi sits in the hot seat when it comes to her daughter’s fashion advice.
The former Top Chef host, 55, and her 15-year-old daughter, Krishna, who are Vogue India’s September cover stars, sat down for a game of “Tell the Truth” with the outlet, where they got candid about whether they “silently” judge each other’s outfits. Spoiler: The answer is “all the time.”
“We go by the five-second rule. If the other person can’t change [their outfit] in five seconds and [the comment] is negative, don’t say it. But before we leave the house, we’re pretty brutal with each other,” admitted Krishna. “I will be like, ‘You can’t wear that in public with me.'”
Padma then revealed that her teen is “always telling me to dress more provocatively” — only for Krishna to reveal that her mom tells her the opposite.
Fans got a glimpse at the duo’s to-wear-or-not-to-wear banter on Instagram when the Padma’s All American author attempted to police her offspring’s low-rise jeans by finding any solution to keep them hung on her hips. “A tale as old as time! Shall we start a ‘moms of teenage girls’ support group in the comment section??” Padma wrote.
Despite their differences, Krishna can’t keep her hands off of her mom’s closet and shops around for looks “every day.”
“She doesn’t tell me, which drives me crazy,” Padma said, recounting an incident (which they’ve dubbed “Banglegate”) when Krishna wore her precious gold wedding-day bangles to school in the sixth grade.

Last fall, Padma flipped the script on daring fashion when she made her Pirelli Calendar debut clad in nothing but a wet white T-shirt, and she told PEOPLE that she was excited to show Krishna the photos for a specific reason.
“I want her to see womanhood in all its stages, so I’m very free with my body at home. I’m also very honest and blunt with her, but I always have been in an age-appropriate way,” she said.
She then explained that her skin-baring photo shoot had not only empowered her feelings of being “fully in command” of her body, but had also emphasized her outlook on aging.
“I’m here to tell younger women that you shouldn’t be afraid of aging. You shouldn’t be afraid that time is running out. You should know that it just gets better and better and better because you learn from life. You become experienced,” she said.
