Bills lose defensive tackle DeWayne Carter for 2025 season
The Bills are dealing with another defensive injury blow ahead of Week 1.
Defensive tackle DeWayne Carter tore his Achilles and will be out for the 2025 season, as the player confirmed himself in responding to a post on social media. Per ESPN, Carter’s injury occurred during a practice on Wednesday.
In response to a report of his injury, Carter posted to X saying, “This is all a part of my testimony. I will be back. John 13:7.”
The 24-year-old was set to take on a bigger role this season as part of the defensive line rotation, learning from starters Ed Oliver and DaQuan Jones.
Now, the unit has taken another hit after already watching defensive linemen Larry Ogunjobi and Michael Hoecht get suspended for the first six games of the season for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing substance policy.
With Carter down, one of the three defensive line rookies — T.J. Sanders, Landon Jackson or Deone Walker — will likely take on a larger role.
It’s the Bills second big defensive injury in the preseason, following first-round rookie cornerback Maxwell Hairston, who went down with a knee injury.
He was placed on injured reserve, leaving him to miss at least the first four games of the season to start his NFL career.
Buffalo took Carter 95th overall pick in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft out of Duke. He played in 11 games, including three starts, and recorded 14 tackles and eight pressures in his rookie year.
The Bills open the season on “Sunday Night Football” against the Ravens on Sept. 7.
