Sorana Cirstea has trophy stolen from hotel during US Open
Thievery has reportedly crept into the drama of the U.S. Open.
Romania’s Sorana Cirstea has claimed her singles trophy from the Tennis in the Land hard court tournament in Cleveland was stolen from her hotel room in New York while she was playing in the year’s final Grand Slam tournament, per the Associated Press.
She had pleaded for the trophy to be found from the hotel on Saturday night, which was two days after she was eliminated from the singles draw in Flushing, Queens.
Cirstea is staying at The Fifty Sonesta Hotel New York in Midtown Manhattan.
“Whoever stole my Cleveland trophy from room 314 at The Fifty Sonesta please give it back!” Cirstea wrote in an Instagram story. “It has NO material value, just sentimental value. It would be [greatly] appreciated!”
The hotel said it had no comment for AP.
The trophy was the 35-year-old’s third career singles title in what was a warm-up tournament for the U.S. Open. She beat American Ann Li in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.
At the Open, Cirstea went on to lose to No. 11 Karolina Muchova in the second round.
She also was eliminated from the women’s doubles draw in the first round with partner Anna Kalinskaya after losing 7-5, 6-4 to Peyton Stearns and McCartney Kessler.
Cirstea is ranked No. 57 in the world in doubles and No. 71 in singles.
