Taylor Townsend gets into fiery US Open moment with Jelena Ostapenko

Taylor Townsend and Jeļena Ostapenko had a heated exchange in the second round of the U.S. Open on Tuesday after the American won, 7-5, 6-1.

As Townsend went up to Ostapenko to shake hands, the Latvian appeared to say something to Townsend that she didn’t like.

The two got into a back-and-forth before Townsend walked away and started pumping up the crowd on court 11, which was already behind her.

“It’s competition. People get upset when they lose and some people say bad things,” Townsend said in an on-court interview with ESPN. “She told me I have no class, I have no education and to see what happens when we get outside the U.S. I’m looking forward to it.

“I mean, I beat her in Canada, outside the US. … Let’s see what else she has to say.”

It wasn’t immediately clear what led to the comments and the interaction.
