“I started dating a little bit [after my divorce] and just met some f*cking bums that couldn’t pay the tab,” she said of the inspiration behind the song “Too Good.” “I brought to my cowriters this idea, and I was like, ‘I’ve been doing a few losers. I think it’s just a stroke of bad luck. It’s gonna end soon.’”
The song includes lines like “I was always too good for your ass anyway,” and “Bed feels bigger and that’s alright with me / Hope that you’re doing the same / And the couch that you’re on is okay.”
Morris told the audience — which included Howard and Beth Stern, Jason Biggs, Don Lemon and Bobby Flay — that the new album is inspired by her 2024 divorce from fellow songwriter Ryan Hurd and “it’s the aftermath.”
“It’s a gift I’ve learned, not just a tragedy,” she said of the heartbreak. “I just learned to write through it, whatever I was going through, which is like the point of songwriting. I never really wanted to write about those things, but I’m so glad that I did because I learned about myself and what I actually love writing about and just being very, I guess, no filtered.”
Morris and Hurd have a five year old son. They got married in 2018.
She first filed for divorce in October 2023. It was finalized January 2024.
“We’re over a year out now … we get along now and have moved past a lot of it,” Morris recently said on a podcast. “We’re neighbors, and I’m just so fortunate that we have put our son above each other’s sh*t, and it’s better for the two of us if we’re getting along.”
“American Pie” star Biggs hosted the night for the Soho Sessions, an exclusive concert series founded by Greg Williamson and Nicole Rechter, which has raised millions for charities.
Biggs told us that he got involved after reading an article on a concert they did with Paul Simon and “slid into Greg’s DMs” to get involved.
He is also a fan of Morris.
“‘The Bones’ is currently on my playlist,” Biggs told Page Six. “I listened to it on my bike ride today.”
Also performing for the evening, which raised money for the FLAG Art Foundation, was singer Yola, who had radio star Stern bopping in his seat to her cover of Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy.”
Stern — whose $500 contract with SiriusXM ends in the Fall, leading to speculation about his future — was all smiles at the show, sweetly holding hands with wife Beth.
“Law & Order: SVU” star Chris Meloni was also in the crowd, telling us he is a big fan of the Soho Sessions, which has also seen performances by Nile Rodgers, Joss Stone and Kate Hudson.
“My wife Sherman and I been experiencing this ‘happening’”’ since the beginning, and the spirit of giving, the sense of good will, and of community are unique and life giving,” Meloni said. “It’s an exercise in using art to help folks, support great causes and give hope.”
