Yet another A-list celebrity will be taking over the helm in True Detective Season 5.
Variety reports Nicolas Cage is in talks to star in the critically acclaimed HBO drama when it returns. The outlet notes True Detective Season 5 will reportedly be set in the Jamaica Bay area of Long Island in New York City.
True Detective: Night Country showrunner and writer Issa López will be returning for Season 5.
This marks the latest news in Cage’s recent pivot to television. Cage recently signed on to a live-action Spider-Man series for Prime Video in which he will reprise his Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse character, Spider-Man Noir. The series is expected to premiere in 2026.
True Detective has become a star-magnet since it debuted in 2014, highlighting the lives of various police detectives trying to investigate violent crimes that have left their towns shaken, while battling their own personal demons.
Season 1 quickly earned critical acclaim thanks to Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson’s performance as as a pair of detectives in Louisiana, which earned each of the stars a Primetime Emmy nomination.
Later seasons starred Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, Rachel McAdams, and Mahershala Ali, who was also nominated for an Emmy for Season 3.
True Detective: Night Country brought the show to a small town in Alaska where detectives (Jodie Foster and Kali Reis) investigated the sudden disappearance of eight men from a remote research station.
The fourth season earned the most award nominations of any previous season, and is reportedly the most-watched season on HBO.
Foster won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress In A Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie. Reis was also nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress for her performance as Detective Evangeline Navarro, making history as one of the Indigenous actresses to be nominated for an acting Emmy.
