Audra McDonald details creepy fan encounter that left her fearing for her safety
Audra McDonald feared for her safety after an overzealous fan followed her home after a Broadway show and demanded her autograph.
The Tony winner, 55, posted a lengthy video on Instagram Saturday explaining that creepy encounter occurred Friday night after her “Gypsy” performance.
McDonald prefaced the story by explaining that during the run of the hit show she had opted out of signing autographs at the stage door due to “health, exhaustion and vocal health.”
However, on Friday night, a theater-goer “snuck around and found me the way I had exited” and followed McDonald to where she was staying.
The person “came into the building, and was uncomfortably close,” the actress added.
The “Gilded Age” star was forced to involve security, prompting the fan to assert that they deserved an autograph because they had traveled to see the show.
“That is crossing a big old boundary, and I just want to call that out,” McDonald shared. “That’s a big no-no. That’s now messing with my safety, and it’s not right.”
McDonald also instructed Broadway fans on how to approach a star after a show.
“When you see an actor leave the stage door, if they don’t stop, leave them alone,” she advised. “There is a reason that they’re not stopping, and it has nothing to do with you.
“It’s them protecting their space and peace, whatever that may be, and if they do stop or wave or take a picture with you or sign an autograph, great, but please respect the proper boundaries.”
Fellow Broadway star Kecia Lewis applauded McDonald in the comments and wrote that she hopes theater fans watch the video to understand that “after giving 200% of your whole body, soul, and spirit to an audience, to then feel that you DESERVE more, is the devil’s work.”
McDonald is wrapping up her run in “Gypsy,” as Mama Rose, a role that garnered her a Tony nomination.
Earlier this year, McDonald unwittingly found herself in the middle of a theatrical drama when Patti LuPone claimed in an interview that the two were no longer friends
“The Good Fight” alum handled the contretemps gracefully.
“If there’s a rift between us, I don’t know what it is,” McDonald said in an interview. “That’s something you’d have to ask Patti about.”
