Disney has given the greenlight to fantasy series Coven Academy, which was ordered to pilot in March.
The new series, which is slated to premiere on both Disney and Disney+, will follow a group of teenage witches navigating magic and heartbreak at an academy for witchcraft in New Orleans. The series is being teased as a “thrilling, witty blend of magic, mystery and teen drama.”
“Between unraveling dark secrets, mastering volatile magic, and facing off against distractingly cute rivals, they must also navigate the heartbreaks and deep bonds that come with growing up,” reads the series logline.
Disney Branded Television President Ayo Davis said the series will blend “supernatural intrigue with the friendships, challenges and self-discovery of the teenage experience,” per Deadline.
A Series of Unfortunate Events star Malina Weissman will lead the series as Briar. The cast is rounded out by Tiffani Thiessen, Louis Thresher, Jordan Leftwich, and Sasha and Ora Duplass.
The series will also feature stars from Disney’s recent hit feature Zombies 4: Dawn of the Vampires, including Malachi Barton and Swayam Bhatia.
High School Musical: The Musical: The Series creator Tim Federle wrote and directed the pilot, and will serve as executive producer for the series.
Federle said the series is “a love letter to the genre YA shows” he grew up watching.
“I’m thrilled to bring this original story to the screen with my longtime friends at Disney, led by Ayo Davis, and I can’t wait for the world to meet the incredible cast and crew who are conjuring our world into being,” he said.
Coven Academy is expected to premiere on Disney and Disney+ in 2026.
