Arizona girl, 15, found dead at senior complex, then elderly resident commits suicide
A 15-year-old girl was found fatally shot in the head at an Arizona senior complex Aug. 4 — with her murder a mystery until an elderly man later committed suicide and was deemed her killer, cops say.
The body of Kyelonna Meya Smiley was discovered at the retirement home in Phoenix on Aug. 4, baffling police and her mother, who had no idea why she’d been visiting the complex, according to azfamily.com.
Nohe Prado Morelia, 67, then took his own life at an unspecified nearby business where his body was discovered four days later — and cops say they now believe he killed the teen.
“The person who took my baby away shattered my world,” the girl’s mother, Fiyonna Austin, told FOX 10. “I am very, very sad and heartbroken.”
Kyelonna, who was about to start her freshman year of high school at Trevor G. Browne High School, left home Aug. 1 and led her mom to believe she was staying at a friends’ house, Austin said.
Austin says she doesn’t know who Morelia was, how he knew her daughter or why she ended up at the senior complex on 75th Avenue and Encanto Boulevard.
It’s not clear how police linked Kyelonna’s slaying to Morelia, 67.
Cops also acknowledged that they do not know the motive for the killing, although they have closed the case.
