Jameis Winston goes viral for performing ‘Thriller’ dance during Giants camp
Jameis Winston doesn’t seem too stressed about the Giants’ backup backup quarterback competition.
Winston busted out the dance moves during Saturday’s training camp practice, doing his best “Thriller” dance as the late’s Michael Jackson hit song — and legendary dance and music video — from the early 1980s blasted while waiting his turn in drills.
Winston, signed in free agency before the Giants drafted Jaxson Dart in the first round, is battling the first-round pick to start the season as the backup quarterback behind Russell Wilson.
Brian Daboll has said repeatedly that Wilson will be the starting quarterback in Week 1, but the No. 2 spot is wide open.
“We’re going to go out here and practice, and the guys are going to compete,” Daboll told reporters this week about the backup quarterback job. “The roster will be set when the roster is set.”
It would appear to be a matter of time before Dart is the backup, and then a matter of time before he is on the field, but whether that is a question of weeks or of the full season will depend on how all three quarterbacks play.
“I look at it as if I’m in a battle for my life,” Winston told reporters last Sunday.
With that kind of stress, it’s good he can still let loose.
Winston is preparing for his 11th season and first with the Giants after spending the 2024 season with the Browns.
The former No. 1 pick in the 2015 NFL Draft threw 13 touchdowns to 12 interceptions in 12 games, including seven starts, after replacing the injured Deshaun Watson.
The 30-year-old spent the first five years of his career, all with the Buccaneers, as a starter before transitioning to the veteran backup role.
It’s possible there could be trade interest in Winston should the Giants opt to open the season with Dart as Wilson’s backup.
