‘WWHL’: Kristen Johnston Remembers The Time Dame Joan Collins Dissed Her On ‘Flintstones’ Set
Kristen Johnston was once dissed by the iconic Joan Collins, who played her on-screen mother in the 2000 comedy The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas.
Johnston stopped by the Bravo Clubhouse alongside her Leanne co-star Leanne Morgan for Sunday night’s (July 27) episode of Watch What Happens Live, where host Andy Cohen looked back on some of her memorable work.
“You were in a run. Austin Powers and then The Flintstones was around then as well, when you were working with Dame Joan Collins, who called you ‘the blancmange,’” Cohen joked.
Johnston added, “Yeah. The ‘big white blancmange,’ which I thought was a compliment. But apparently it’s a very boring pudding in England.”
So, how exactly would Collins throw her shade? According to Johnston, she’d say something along the lines of, “Who’s gonna see me with the big white blancmange standing there?”
The actress’ name was brought up again later on in the episode when an audience member asked Johnson, who has worked with countless big-name celebrities, to name one person she would never work with again. While Johnston tried to play nice at first, she was finally able to give her long-overdue clap-back at Collins.
“I’ve been very lucky. I know that’s the politically correct answer, but I really have been. I mean, maybe Joan Collins,” she said with a giggle. “I don’t know. But I’ve been very lucky.”
Just one year after she starred in Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999), Johnston played Wilma Slaghoople in The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas, taking over for Elizabeth Perkins, who held the role in the first Flintstones film. Collins, for her part, played Wilma’s mother Pearl Slaghoople, a role that was previously held by Elizabeth Taylor.
Watch What Happens Live airs Sunday through Thursday at 10 p.m. ET on Bravo. New episodes are available to stream the next day on Peacock.
