‘Bachelor’ alum Madi Prewett and husband blasted for appearing excited to spank daughter
Madi Prewett and her husband, Grant Troutt, are catching heat for their enthusiasm for spanking.
Critics are going after the religious couple for the way they spoke about spanking their daughter, Hosanna, as a form of discipline during an episode of the “Bachelor” alum’s podcast, “Stay True.” Some fans accused Troutt in particular of appearing to be “giddy” over spanking Hosanna in the episode, which dropped earlier this month.
Troutt — who explained that their pro-spanking beliefs are rooted in the Bible — said it would be “hilarious” when they start using corporal punishment on Hosanna.
“The Lord’s discipline is always off of the heels of disobedience or sin,” he argued. “So think about it, when you have a child, you don’t just discipline them for being good and obeying you, right? Like, if Hosanna obeys us, we’re not like, ‘Come here, girl, come here. Alright, pull ’em down, get that — you know — Mama, get her.’”
“Which will be hilarious by the way, when we start spanking Hosanna,” he continued enthusiastically. “Which we will, on the record, because the Bible clearly says, ‘Folly is bound up in a child, but discipline drives it far away.’”
Prewett backed up her husband, also citing the Bible.
“It also specifically says discipline with a rod. … Well some people could say, ‘You can discipline them with time outs.’ Hold on, it says with a rod,’” she stressed.
The couple received a lot of angry comments on both their YouTube page and on TikTok, accusing them of being “smug” about the use of corporal punishment.
“There is nothing godly about laughing at the thought of harming a child. … What you’re describing is not parenting, it’s abuse. And no scripture condones the smug enjoyment of it,” one YouTube comment reads.
“Coming from a family of abuse, this is so wrong on all levels and I find it very disturbing that your husband takes joy in spanking his daughter in the future. Very unsettling,” another comment reads.
Some users had issue with Prewett’s interpretation of the rod in the Bible.
“Just for context, a rod was used by shepherds to guide and protect their sheep. It was not used for physical punishment in the way people physically punish their children,” one YouTube comment reads.
“I’d look more into how shepherds used rods in the context of that time period,” the comment continues. “People use scripture to justify all sorts of behavior and just because our parents raised us one way doesn’t make it the correct way. Keep in mind that people also used scripture to justify slavery.”
TikTok content creator stepwithdadeets blasted the “pretty weird” couple in a video on Sunday, saying in part, “Telling the internet that you are going to pull down your tiny daughter’s pants for punishment, telling the internet how happy you are to do this, is sickening.”
Comments on the video agreed that Troutt appeared happy over spanking his daughter in the future.
“The fact that he’s so giddy about it scares me,” a TikTok user noted.
“No cause why is he excited,” another comment reads.
“‘Which will be HILARIOUS’ ummmm, why is he so excited?” a third person chimed in.
Prewett and Troutt — who’s a speaker and minister to athletes and churches — got married in October 2022. They welcomed daughter Hosanna in January.
They’ve been candid about their relationship and strong religious beliefs on her podcast, specifically when it comes to their struggles.
Earlier this month, Troutt spoke about overcoming his past porn addiction, recalling that he was on a “shameful roller-coaster cycle” of “looking at pornography” and smoking marijuana.
Prewett also talked about her own past porn and masturbation addictions on her podcast.
“Thankfully, by the grace of God and by the power of Godly community and people around me, I have been free from porn and masturbation for, I don’t even know, 10 years,” she shared last month. “That was something that enslaved me and marked me for so long.”
