Brooks Raley inching closer to filling a desperate Mets need

Just about everything is going according to plan for Brooks Raley, except perhaps his level of importance.

When he agreed to a deal with the Mets in April, A.J. Minter and Danny Young were quality lefties in a major league bullpen he expected to join.

Just a few days later, both were shelved with arms that would require season-ending surgeries.

“I know God works in mysterious ways, but that was pretty wild,” Raley said this week. “Because I was like, ‘This will be fun to get healthy and not have to be the guy,’ right? And then it was like: Danny down. A.J. down. I was like, ‘There’s no way,’ right?
